Shaping a bright future for thriving neighbourhoods around six new stations

Suburban Rail Loop will not only transform our public transport network – it will help shape how Melbourne grows in the decades ahead.

This is an exciting opportunity to plan for the future of the neighbourhoods around SRL stations – to create thriving centres with quality housing options, services and job opportunities close to home.

Scroll down to explore draft visions outlining preliminary ideas and opportunities for each local area.

Feedback previously received from local residents, traders and organisations will inform the strategic long-term planning for Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill.

Melbourne's growth trajectory

Victoria and Melbourne are growing rapidly

Victoria is forecast to be home to around 11 million people in the 2050s, with up to 9 million of those based in Melbourne. That’s the same size as London today.

Our ‘hub and spoke’ metropolitan rail network does not support a growing city. Historically, Melbourne has grown at its fringes. And the more a city sprawls, the less liveable it becomes.

Connecting our suburbs will get people where they need to go – to university and school, medical appointments and work – and help Melbourne become a ‘city of centres’.

Detailed and thoughtful planning is required to enable the areas around the new stations to build on the existing strengths of these suburbs and ensure these communities continue to thrive in the future.
